It is an byproductof Marigold oil so it has some properties similar to it.It has antiviral, anti-genotoxic and anti-inflammatory properties.Marigold hydrolate in suspension or in tincture is used topicallyto treat acne, reducing inflammation, controlling bleeding andsoothing irritated tissue. There is "limited evidence" thatcalendula cream or ointment is effective in treating radiationdermatitis.
Marigold water hasbeen used traditionally for abdominal cramps and constipation. Inexperiments with rabbit jejeunum the aqueous-ethanol extractofCalendula officinalis flowers was shown to have bothspasmolytic and spasmogenic effects, thus providing a scientificrationale for this traditional use. An aqueous extract of marigoldobtained by a novel extraction method has demonstrated anti-tumor(cytotoxic) activity and immunomodulatory properties (lymphocyteactivation) in vitro, as well as anti-tumor activity inmice.
